I've never heard of A36 Grade 50. The "36" is the grade, so that's like saying "Grade 36 Grade 50". A lot of the A36 products may run well over 36ksi yield, but there's no guarantees. A lot of the A36 products may also be dual/triple spec materials with SA36, A709, etc. A709 Gr.50 vs A588 - American Welding SocietyThe A709 Gr 50 is equivalent to A572 Gr 50. The answer is yes you can, unless you are working with a contract requiring otherwise. I normally run D1.5 PQRs with A588/A709-50W so that the test will qualify the lesser grades as well.
